If you use an HTPC now a days, you may not realize where all that great programming comes from. Well, Mike Garcen of Missing Remote has just published a great article to show you.
Covering the last decade in the HTPC software arena, Mike has taken time to go through the developments of the apps that have become what we use today. I have to admit that since I 1) have only been using an HTPC for about 5 years and 2) have only used Windows Media Center, I didn’t know about a lot of these packages. Mike has put them together in a great way with screenshots and a history for each one.
Here’s a sample:
Started back in 2002, Showshifter was one of the oldest Home Theater PC applications, which sadly bit the dust a couple years ago. Their design/interface didn’t change much throughout the years, but it was one of the first and was pretty popular.
I encourage you to take a look at the article if you’re at all interested in HTPC. Knowing where you come from can help you know where you’re going!
I remember using Showshifter before MCE as it came frse with the (also defunct) Digital Home magazine. If I do recall correctly didn't Yahoo buy it and sit on it (or was that meedio)?
Yes it was Yahoo that bought meedio. I'm also sure that a company linkeb to Apple bought the MP3 brand called Rio. Funny how things work out!
