Background music playback is one of those features that Xbox One owners have been wanting since the system’s launch. In fact, it’s the most requested feature on the Xbox Feedback site. The lack of this feature has been especially frustrating considering the Xbox 360 had it from that console’s launch. Well, now we have a better idea for when we can expect to play music in the background, and we got the answer straight from the head of the Xbox program, Phil Spencer.
Lately it seems like the best way to get information about forthcoming Microsoft releases is to just ask the appropriate people on Twitter. After all, we’ve grown quite accustomed to getting announcements about Windows 10 from Gabe Aul on Twitter. The same strategy apparently works with Phil Spencer too. One Xbox fan asked when we’ll be able to play music in the background, while keeping our gaming session full screen, and Spencer replied with the following:
So apparently we won’t be getting background music playback until after the Xbox One receives the upgrade to Windows 10. When will that happen? Let’s go back to the source for that too! In another response on Twitter Phil Spencer said it will be coming “post-summer.” We know that Microsoft is trying to get Windows 10 pushed to all available platforms this year, so it’s our expectation that the Xbox One will get the upgrade this fall.
If you’d like to listen to your music while gaming on the Xbox One, you can already do that now. Simply open the Xbox Music app, select your music, and then snap the Xbox Music app. While it’s certainly not ideal, as it consumes a small portion of the right side of the display, at least it works. Remember, if you’re just trying to listen to your music library, you don’t need an Xbox Music Pass to use the app. Just upload your music library to OneDrive, and it will all be available to play, free of charge, through the Xbox Music app on your Xbox One.
