Seen in HD Episode 12 – Blu Christmas

hd

Welcome to the Seen in HD holiday wish list show. This week we take a look at some of the best Black Friday deals along with some other holiday-themed content.

Before we get to the holiday extravaganza, we take a few minutes to talk about the news this week that Netflix is working with the studios on a possible 30-day delay before the rental service gets access to new releases. You read that right, according to the article on VideoBusiness.com, Netflix may have instigated the conversations.

That leads the hosts into talking about Black Friday deals. Blu-ray prices continue to fall, as Target’s ad shows $8.99 Blu-rays and Best Buy goes as low as $7.99. Player prices continue to fall as well, as new reports shows Meijer and Wal-Mart with $89 and $78 players. Will we hit the magic $49.99 number?

Prices are already starting to fall. Wal-Mart has posted some great deals to its Web site already, hoping to stem some of the Black Friday shopping crush. Best Buy is running a nice deal on a quality Panasonic Blu-ray player with a free copy of Up. The next few weeks, including the Monday after Thanksgiving known as Cyber Monday, might be some of the best times to get great deals on new HD electronics.

Additionally, several new Blu-rays are getting price drops right out the door. This past week there was the great deal on Up and Monster’s Inc., and looking ahead both Best Buy and Amazon have discounted some high-profile new releases like Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Talking Blu-ray, we run down the list of remaining releases for 2009 for your gift-buying pleasure. We also take a spin through some movies that haven’t made their way to Blu-ray but should. Keeping with the wish list theme, we also look at some hardware we’d like to find with a big red bow on it at our house. Finally, we breeze through the list of holiday TV classics set to hit the airwaves in the coming weeks.

A brief discussion on History’s WWII in HD, including some dissension on History’s choice to crop the footage to 16:9 from its original 4:3 format.

In the HD Sportsman, college hoops takes center stage this week, as ESPN and ESPN2 have a 24-hour marathon on Tuesday night.

The Blu-ray release schedule for Nov. 24 is the final boring week of the year, as there isn’t much to talk about outside of Cujo and The Way of the Gun.
