Gaming headsets for the Xbox One have been a topic we’ve covered in-depth here at the DMZ. First it didn’t appear as if Microsoft would include a headset with the console. Then they announced that they would. Later we discovered that headsets designed for the Xbox 360 wouldn’t work at the launch of the Xbox One. Then at CES we were able to look at a few headsets specifically designed for the One from Turtle Beach and Polk Audio. While there we received conflicting information as to whether adapters would become available that would allow other headsets to be used with the Xbox One. Fortunately, Microsoft has made an announcement that clears everything up.
Microsoft has surprisingly announced that they are releasing their own stereo headset for the Xbox One. It’s an accessory that will sell for $79.99. The headset has a boom microphone on it, and it only has one audio cable. That cable connects through a new audio adapter directly to the Xbox One controller. This means you won’t need any awkward secondary cables running from the headset back to the Xbox.
The new audio adapter features controls for adjusting game and chat audio independently. It also has a mute button. The headset connects to the adapter through a standard audio jack. That allows you to use any headset, even ones that you use with your phone, to chat with your friends on Xbox Live. What makes that more useful is that the audio adapter can be purchased separately for $29.99. If you already have a headset that you really like you’ll now be able to use it with the Xbox One.
Both the stereo headset and the audio adapter are set to hit the shelves in early March. You’ll be able to grab one just in time for some marathon Titanfall gaming sessions!
Update: Both devices are now available for pre-order! Amazon says they will ship on February 25th.
