Windows 7 File Types and Containers

windows7mediacenter With Windows 7 officially launching in just a few short weeks weeks time to revisit some news that actually came out with the beta about nine months ago.  I don’t want to go too deep as you may have already read about this but I thought it was worth mentioning.

One of the biggest changes in Windows 7 Media Center is the number of video file formats and containers are supported.  With the addition of the AVI container as well as other formats it can get confusing as to what will play within Windows 7 locally as well as on extenders.  You can of course always look to add codec packs and splitters but it’s just  not as necessary as it used to be.

Back in January, Stuart, one of the bloggers at The Digital Lifestyle, published a full PDF file detailing not only the types of files that will play in Windows 7 Media Center but the types that will stream to your extenders natively as well.  This can be great help when trying to decide whether or not you want those family videos to play and where.

Have a look at  Stuart’s full post for all the information as well as a link to the PDF he created.  I’m not sure that it’s been updated lately but it should give you most if not all the information you need.

Thanks to Kromseesall on twitter for reminding me this was out there!
