Many people who use Media Center are also techno buffs. As such, most of us know about codecs, containers and the whatnot. What we don’t often get to hear about is the development and future of different aspects of the industry.
Davis Freeberg of ZatzNotFunny recently had a chance to speak with Dan Marlin, CEO and co-founder of CoreCodec. Mr. Freeberg also sits on the board of the Matroska Foundation. While it may be a somewhat difficult read depending on your level of interest in codecs and containers, the article and subsequent interview are chock full of info on that past, present and future of what is quickly becoming a very popular container.
A quick sample:
In our interview, we discussed the growing momentum behind the MKV format, his thoughts on DivX and the competitive landscape of the codec industry and had a passionate discussion around a controversial decision by Microsoft to prevent outside developers from using alternative filters in Window’s Media Player.
In regards to MKV, Marlin had many positives things to say about the momentum that they are seeing. When I asked him about interest in the format, he said that over the last 8 months, they’ve seen a “20 fold increase in the inquiries in regards to more details, about usage about enhancing the current feature set.”
Again, I encourage you to read Davis’ article. As well, he provides a link to the full interview with Dan. Some really great info in there if you’re at all concerned about the future of digital video content.

It is supposed to be Davis' not Davis's article.
