I know right? Imagine someone using BitTorrent for a legal purpose. Not even possible you say? Well, since P2P file sharing isn’t illegal it was only a matter of time before someone found a good way to use it legally. Specifically getting indie films to smaller movie houses which might not want to pay shipping expenses back and forth with the distributor. Supporters have been saying this is possible for years and maybe they’ll finally be vindicated.
The Far North Living Lab recently streamed Carved by Jonas Rejman to a theater located in Norway. The movie was streamed at a 2k resolution with a bitrate or 19Mb/s. Should be plenty for HD. Some of those participating in the experiment had to see the file with local PCs but upgrading the theater’s net connection would alleviate that problem. It should be noted that all of this was done with the permission of the copyright holder.
The question that comes next is how do you secure BitTorrent enough to please Hollywood execs who only see P2P as the enemy trying to steal their content. Good luck with that one. Further tests are slated to be run in China soon.
