Amazon 4K UHD with HDR Arrives on Xbox One S

Here at the DMZ we’re a little obsessive when it comes to watching high quality video. In fact, just this morning while waiting for my coffee, I wondered what ever happened to the Amazon Video app for the Xbox One S that supported 4K and HDR. Apparently Microsoft and Amazon were reading my caffeine-deprived mind, because later in they day they finally released an updated app.

The new Amazon Video app doesn’t look significantly different, but the video quality is greatly improved for some content. You can now watch Amazon Originals such as The Man in the High Castle and Patriot in Ultra High Definition with High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. If you already have the app installed it should have updated automatically. If you were holding off until you could enjoy 4k, head to the store and get the app for free.

If you’re a frequent user of the Amazon Video app you may not notice a difference at first. If you select Originals from the main menu on the left you’ll see many titles, including Bosch, Patriot, The Man in the High Castle, and Manchester by the Sea, all have a UHD badge in the corner of the poster. If you select a show you’ll also see a badge for HDR on many of the shows. This is the best way to find content in 4k with HDR. If you simply search for a show, like Patriot, it will typically only show you the 1080p version. We don’t understand why there are multiple versions of shows and movies in the catalog, but it’s something you should keep an eye out for.

Now the Xbox One allows you to watch 4k UHD Blu-ray discs, along with offering 4k content from Netflix, VUDU, and Amazon. How is it working out for you? Let us know in the comments below.
