Despite Delays You Can Get the HDHomeRun DVR Early

hdhomerun-appsBack in April SiliconDust started a Kickstarter campaign to develop their own DVR. It’s called HDHomeRun DVR. The campaign was wildly successful, and it smashed through the initial goal for the campaign, plus all of the stretch goals. The plan was to make it available as an Early Access product in June to anyone who backed the campaign with at least $60. For $30 backers they would get access to the release candidate. SiliconDust had planned to have that ready in September. For anyone else who missed out on the Kickstarter, they would need to wait until later this fall for the final release.

Today they shared some good news and bad news. Starting with the bad, SiliconDust is behind schedule. It’s disappointing, but frankly it doesn’t seem like Kickstarter campaigns ever launch on time. In their most recent update they stated the release candidate is about eight weeks behind.

With the bad news behind us, there’s plenty of good news to share. First, if you just can’t wait to get your hands on what SiliconDust is developing, you don’t need to wait anymore. Even if you weren’t a backer of their Kickstarter campaign, or if you only pledged $30 to the cause, you can get in now. Head on over to this page, and you can purchase access to the latest Early Access releases right now. The purchase price is still $60 to get in early, but if you were a $30 backer you can use coupon code KICKSTARTER30 to knock the price down to $30. You’ll need to make sure you use the same email address you used with the Kickstarter campaign when you checkout to get the discount though. Of course, to use the HDHomeRun DVR you’ll need to have an HDHomeRun Prime, HDHomeRun Extend, or HDHomeRun Connect to tune either cable or over-the-air television.

There’s even more good news if you’re a Windows user. In this update they also announced they’ve developed a proof of concept HDHomeRun VIEW app for Windows. It’s a universal app (meaning it will be available through the Windows Store), and it currently runs on Windows 8.1 and 10.

It’s certainly disappointing to hear that SiliconDust is behind schedule on the HDHomeRun DVR, but they’ve gone the extra mile by letting eager fans get access to it early. Did you miss out on the campaign? Are you planning to jump in now to see what SiliconDust has in store? Let us know in the comments below.
