Seen in HD Ep. 3 – FCC & your HDTV, I, Robot review and more

hd

Welcome to September here on “Seen in HD”. Just a quick show note: there will be no new show for Sept. 9 (Labor Day Week) and we’ll be back with a new show the week of Sept. 14 when Brent Evans of Geek Tonic joins us for our 2009 Fall TV Season Extravaganza.

In the news on this week’s show, Adam and Phil take a look at a recent FCC ruling that could affect TV viewing on HTPCs and why some of the early furor may have been overdone. Also in the news, the Cowboys have the biggest 1080p scoreboard in their new stadium, why is it causing “do overs” in games? Finally a big sale on HDTVs at Best Buy and the trend of certain retailers getting Blu-ray new releases ahead of the general retail community (Best Buy has Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz a month ahead of general release), is it a good thing?

This week’s Blu-ray review looks at Will Smith’s I, Robot. Phil explains why you don’t want to overlook this disc if you’re looking for a quality demo disc and a pretty good movie. Phil also talks about comparing the Blu-ray version to the FX HD version from Comcast.

Next up, Netflix offers HD versions of some of its content on the Xbox 360, but can you actually get it? Both Adam and Phil talk about their inabilities to stream HD content with any success from Netflix. Having the same issue? Hit us up in the comments or let Phil or Adam know on Twitter.

The HD picks for the coming week looks at The CWs (1080i) time machine Thursday with new versions of 90210 and Melrose Place (yes we’re serious) and Sons of Anarchy on FX HD (720p) all premiering on Thursday, Sept. 8. College football returns Thursday, Sept. 3 and for the family HD viewer, Rogers and Hammerstein’s Sound of Music is on ABC Family HD (720p) Sunday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

With college football coming back, there’s a lot to talk about in The HD Sportsman. The highlight game from Thursday is Oregon playing on the “Smurf Turf” at Boise State at 10 p.m. on ESPN HD (720p). For all the HD sports action, check out the full HD Sportsman post on Living High Def.

Finally, with no show next week Phil runs through the Sept. 8 and 15 Blu-ray releases, highlighted by Fringe Season 1, Silverado, Casablanca and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
