SiliconDust Debuts Beta HDHomeRun App for Roku

HDHomeRun OTA Live screen shot

SiliconDust delivers its HDHomeRun television viewing platform on numerous devices, including mobile, consoles, and Apple TV. But so far Roku users haven’t been able to take advantage of this versatile television platform.

This week, SiliconDust has debuted a beta version of its first offering for Roku, called HDHomeRun OTA Live. As the name implies, this app is somewhat more limited than on other platforms, supporting only live over-the-air viewing from an HDHomeRun OTA tuner device. But according to their blog post, this is only the first step. They’re working on DVR functionality and support for cable stations from HDHomeRun Prime tuners.

Avid HDHomeRun users may be initially disappointed by this limited feature set. But we’re happy to see SiliconDust take a more iterative approach here. This allows them to deliver some highly-requested functionality to Roku now rather than waiting for a larger, more complex release.

HDHomeRun OTA Live offers the basics you’d expect for a TV viewing app like tuning channels and guide access. And since it’s a beta, you’ll need to add it to your Roku account through a process outlined clearly on SiliconDust’s blog.

We haven’t had a chance to check this new app out yet, so if you give it a try, leave a comment below to let us know what you think!
