Wireless HD Standard Set

WHDI_logo One of the two competing groups looking to make wireless High Definition transmission a reality has released a spec.

The Wireless Home Digital Interface group (WHDI) released their spec into the wild earlier this week.  Backed by Sharp, Hitachi, Motorola, Samsung and Sony, the specification uses a 40 MHz channel in the 5GHz unlicensed band.  The interface should support 1080p resolution, HDCP and an uncompressed signal.  (Compared to the original stream.  If that’s compressed, no additional compression is added.)

WirelessHD is a competing product that uses the 60GHz band and also boasts transmission rates as high as 25Gbps.  The interesting part is that some of the same companies supporting WHDI are also supporting WirelessHD.  While competition is usually a good thing, it’ll be a shame if we have a split in the market with this and consumers have to worry about checking which standard their new piece of gear supports.

We’re one step closer to dropping another cable to our equipment.  Now if we can just get those pesky electrons to start jumping through the air, we can cut the power cord too!
