Seen in HD Episode 11 – doblu.com’s Matt Paprocki

hd

We have a special guest this week on Seen in HD. Adam Thursby, the normal co host on the show, was called away last minute but we were lucky enough to have scheduled Matt Paprocki from doblu.com to join us and he filled in admirably despite a slight case of bronchitis.

Matt has posted more than 400 reviews to his site, so we spend some time talking about what he looks for in a Blu-ray when he does his reviews. We also take a look at his hall of fame, picking his brain for some of the best Blu-rays he’s seen, along with some of the worst. Matt also talks about interviews he’s done with the producer of Crank 2 and John Berger of Widescreen.org.

Wrapping up our interview with Matt is a lively discussion on BD-Live and it’s failings so far, including news of an iPhone spin on BD-Live. Matt also clues us in on how you can win How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Blu-ray/DVD from his site.

Thankfully, Matt stuck around for the rest of the show as well. Looking at the news from the previous week, we talk about Ultra HDTV and it’s chances for success, and we look at news from the Blu-con conference, peeking at an article on how Blu-ray sales are saving the consumer entertainment industry thus far in 2009. We wrap up the weeks’ news with a look at managed copy as the Dec. 4 deadline to include the spec in all discs looms. What we fail to mention is that players won’t be ready until mid-2010 at the earliest.

Coming up this week in HD, History Channel’s World War II in HD special starts Sunday at 9 p.m., and the first Christmas special of the year, Merry Madagascar, premieres Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. on NBC featuring the lovable family from the Madagascar movies. In the HD Sportsman, a pair of top-25 teams square of Thursday night on ESPN at 8 p.m. when #25 West Virginia heads to #5 Cincinnati, and the Big Ten title is on the line Saturday on ABC at 3:30 p.m. when #10 Iowa travels to #11 Ohio State.

The Blu-ray release schedule for Nov.17 is as lively as the past couple weeks, highlighted by Kevin Smith movies Chasing Amy and Clerks. Gone with the Wind comes to us in a 70th anniversary special edition, and this summer’s hit Star Trek makes it’s Blu-ray bow as well, the same week the underrated Star Trek-themed spoof Galaxy Quest comes out.
