We kick things off with a listener voicemail (call us at 1-877-856-4933) about last week’s SOC discussion. His take is we may get more content as a result. We give our thoughts on this idea that certainly has some merit.
Best Buy made some news this week with a press release about its CinemaNow product, and in the resulting coverage a very interesting quote about the future of DVDs was revealed. Phil also takes CinemaNow for a spin and downloads Invictus live on the show.
Matt has a PS3, as do many people. A new study by Nielsen shows that the No. 1 reason people buy the PS3 is for the Blu-ray capabilities.
Elsewhere, be a great child this Father’s Day and win a home theater makeover for dad. Or win it for yourself and give dad your old stuff, depends on how nice of a son or daughter you want to be. Also, keep an eye on the Digital Media Zone and Doblu.com for a combo contest to win a copy of The Spy Next Door on Blu-ray.
Finally, wrapping up the Saving Private Ryan issue, the new discs are in stores now. Check for a yellow UPC sticker on back and a blue disc to make sure you get the re-release. And be sure to check out our new Facebook page covering all things on the Digital Media Zone. We’re just launching so bear with us as we perfect it. TV News
It was a big week for TV, renewals and cancellations were finalized, and fall schedules shored up. Thanks to Geek Tonic for his continuing work with us and on his site updating the list of shows that are coming back or saying goodbye. TV Guide has a good look at the major network’s fall schedules. Among the highlights for fall include Detroit 1-8-7 on ABC, and FOX’s Terra Nova project helmed by Steven Spielberg. We also take a peek at the summer schedule, see the full list at Geektonic.
Marketshare/Sales
Marketshare has tanked since Avatar week, falling 10% down to just 12% this week. Revenue didn’t do much better, at only $21.5 million, the lowest in several months and only a 30% increase from this time last year. Avatar held tight to the number one spot, with Private Ryan in second at only 23% of the sales of Avatar. Pandora kept chugging along on Blu-ray, with 40% of its sales this week in the HD format.
Blu-ray Review – Invictus | DoBlu.com review
Vitals: VC-1, 2.39:1 aspect ratio, DTS HD Master Audio 5.1
A pretty solid choice overall. Some plot points that really don’t go anwhere hurt the movie a bit, but overall a pretty solid inspirational sports movie about Nelson Mandela and the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship. Video is shaky to start, but after the first 30 minutes or so, it settles in and becomes a very pleasant disc. On the audio side, the sports scenes steal the show, including a showdown in the rain that surprises with it’s oomph.
Also out recently and reviewed on DoBlu.com: The New Daughter, The Messenger, Extraordinary Measures, and The Spy Next Door.
Gaming
Matt offers his take on Red Dead Redemption and Split Second, and take note that Alan Wake comes out this week as well.
